Hello everyone,
I recently learned of the Terraclips sets and decided I would like to invest in some. After years of having a passing interest in this kind of stuff I've now become a little more involved, having moved house and discovered I have a neighbour who was also quite keen. Between the pair of us and another old friend of mine we've decide we're going to indulge in various tabletop and wargames.
After asking my girlfriend for a Dungeonrise set for Christmas I realised the wait was going to be irritatingly long, so I purchased a SoM set to keep me busy. Yesterday I tried out my first build, which was themed on a marketplace in a great walled city.
I have used almost the entirety of one SoM set, and around one and a half sets of clips. Many of the 3 sided clips remain, and barely any of the others. The build took me around 2-3 hours, much of that time spent changing things around. I kept things simple and (I hope) largely playable based on cover, some open areas, and so forth. Unfortunately there were some casualties- one of the smaller arched sections bent in half due to a clip being faulty and having plastic in the groove, and another piece due to my own heavy handedness. Some are also scuffed on the corners, but i fully expect this. I also realised I used far more clips than I really need. It's sturdier than I ever imagined.
I'll be adding some barrels, crates, sacks and other such pieces over time to pan out the area and make it feel more markety, as well as perhaps some stall elements and signs to really make the theme feel real.
My eventual plan is to add another set or two of Streets to increase the play area, this time building some intricate alleys and then moving upwards by adding a buildings set, as I like the idea of a multi-leveled play area. Not sure whether I'll do interiors.
I've included some pictures below. Please excuse the quality as they were taken on my phone.
I also threw some GW mini's in for no particular reason (despite being totally not part of the theme).
Here's an overview of the first market section-
Located at the bottom right, this building is an oddments shop selling pottery and similar goods. It features a staircase to the roof where many of the owners wares will be drying in the sun. It's also a nifty little place to fire arrows and other such weaponry at passers by. There are two doors, the west-facing (which can be seen in the pic), and a north-facing door, which is perfect for popping in and out to spy on those in the street, or make sneaky attacks.
The central point of this market section, the entry bridge features this raised area where trinkets, nicknacks and yesterdays memories are sold. Frequented by paupers, panhandlers and pickpockets due to it's busy nature it seemed appropriate to install a guardtower where the cities policing force can both keep a view of the market and be within easy reach of the troublesome urchins. The baracade in the middle distance slows down any attempts they may make at escaping.
The bottom left of the area is the only section other than the top-right entrance where vehicles can leave, as it's the natural conclusion of the road in this section (and leads to the alleys that I hope to make when I can afford another set). Again, there is a market stall, this time with an enclosed yard to the site. This will mostly be used for barrel storage. On a hot day the citizens of the city can purchase a beverage and drink atop the stall.
Here's a better look at the top-left entrance, the bridge and the top-market with the guard tower. Down below is where one can purchase meats, fish and dairy, all kept nice and cool away from the sun. Note the walls placed for no other reason than to allow players some cover
Next we have a sneaky alley where thieves may operate, darting from the shadows to steal from your pockets. This area in the far/mid-right is used for storage on market day, with carts, horses and so forth being stored here out of the way of the busy shoppers.
And here we have the addressing stand, where conmen sell their wonder potions and hairgrowth ointments, and corrupt politicians try and win the hearts of citizens (whilst the thieves hidden in the section mentioned above work their magic. From the addressing stand a person looking directly forwards is facing the wall that holds the alley behind).

Thanks! One of my players just came over and saw it and agreed that we need to extend this ASAP. I'm considering tacking my DungeonRise set underneath (or fitting with the layout, at least) until I'm in position to buy another Streets set and a Buildings set. Once I've got them it's going to be outwards and upwards. I already have so many ideas.
