I'm hoping this one will make the $175k goal so we get the bigger more detailed world. It makes me think of a more action based dinosaur MineCraft. Pretty interested in seeing how this turns out and gonna hop in as I still regret ignoring people when they told me to get the MineCraft Beta.

That "RPGs are Evil" project--it's not clear to me whether the guy is doing this for sarcasm or what. Am I missing something about it?

I finally succumbed and grabbed the last $60 spot for Teramyyd. Sigh.

Having an ongoing discussion in a couple of spots. Have friends who contract with White Wolf who were pimping the Exalted Collectors Edition Kickstarter and I asked WHY? They are a successful company with a product that already has an audience. The reply? Because its basically free marketing. Same with the Penny Arcade podcast one. $10? REALLY? So they were going to do it but to promote it, they made a Kickstarter? This is getting freaking ridiculous in my eyes. Kickstarter is supposed to be for people that can't fund their projects in the traditional manner but have a plan. Seems it has become nothing more than a way for medium sized companies to pre-sell products to lower their risk. I can understand that logic, but...it feels like a cheat to me. Sure, they should be allowed to pre-sell their products, but shouldn't that be a completely separate service? It feels, to me, like Kickstarter has been co-opted by companies.

Veronica Mars and Zach Braff anyone? Veronica Mars rights are still owned by Warner Brothers, if they wanted to make a movie why aren't they fronting the funds? Zach Braff certainly has the money to spare if he truly believes in his artistic vision.

My problem with both of those Kickstarters are the rewards, movie paraphanalia/advance screenings/crap. You know what Warner Brothers gets in return when it backs a movie? CASH. Backing a movie is an investment, if I back your movie I expect cash in return (or at minimum a DVD when released for the smaller pledges). I have no problems with small/medium/large companies using Kickstarter to fund early development of projects which also gives invaluable data for demand. With most of those the rewards usually amount to a discounted purchase of the product they're offering. You can't do that with a theatrical release of a movie, and if I pledge 50 bucks what are you going to do? Give me 5 tickets to see the movie?

Small indie movies, meh they make some sense to me but if you have the contacts/resources (or are actually a studio owned property) then you have no business on Kickstarter. But, there's only one thing that's going to stop it. Stop giving them money.

EXACTLY! In Braff's Kickstarter, he openly stated he HAD STUDIO FUNDING but opted not to use it so he wouldn't have to "make sacrifices". Ugh...

All good points. Kickstarter is probably at the apex of its hype. It will be interesting to see how things change as sponsor fatigue sets in and everyone gets more picky about what they back.

I don't have a lot of problem with projects whose sponsors are up-front about who they are, what they want, and what they'll do with the money. It's crowd-sourcing and the crowd can decide whether they want to support the project.

I think we each have projects that we think are ok for Kickstarter, and others we disagree with. A friend pointed out a kickstarter for an author who wanted money to attend a writing seminar so she could finish her book. His point, "That's just a normal expense of your chosen career, it's not an expense of this project." He asked what's next: 'I have to attend a sales meeting so my business can grow, please contribute to my airfare'?

I have less trouble with backing an individual author than a company, but I see his point.

Every project sponsor gains from the buzz/marketing of kickstarter, gaining a quick email list, money, direct feedback from customers, and probably many other benefits. But every project & sponsor gains differently. I think Kickstarter is right to have the crowd decide whether a project is good enough to sponsor (all the above plus anything else you get from it).

But yeah, it is the crowd who has the control. As I said I disagree with those two examples, but clearly plenty of the crowd does not.

I think those are really good points. I often think, though, that certain projects/products will never see the light of day if they're dependent solely upon the traditional financing process present in business. A good example of this was the Double Fine Productions Kickstarter project. They wanted to make an old fashioned video game that hasn't really been done much in the last 5 to 10 years. And a big part of that is due to the way companies get financing for games and who they have to sell the idea to. It was perceived that such a game couldn't sell or didn't have a market nowadays. Their Kickstarter was a way to work around that and prove that there really is a market for such games.

So, from that standpoint, I don't have an issue with established groups using KS as a platform. Heck, the Bones project might not have seen the light of day since it was from an established company. Reaper isn't a huge company, really, so they have to work the financing on every new line just right--normally.

The spot where I strongly agree with the complaints about KS mentioned above is when the person donating isn't really getting much of anything from the project. Or they're getting something that is of very little value compared to their "donation." That Zach Braff project seems kinda like that.

I just don't have the storage or application to justify most physical projects so I'm looking primarily at PC games.

I'm in on for beta access.

Not sure I'm sold on yet but I'm keeping an eye on it. The early birds are already gone so I don't mind waiting.

Some interesting finds there. It IS kinda telling that the other 2 games have goals significantly lower than Rawbots. I think that's going to kill the donations.

Yeah, the geeky side of me that liked the level of programming and the like that they mentioned is probably going to put A LOT of people off too. The implementation certainly seemed simplified but still pretty intimidating.

I am more likely to use the KoW figures... but the DZ game looks like fun, too....
