I'm just wondering about one aspect of CityWorks Modern that troubles me (no, this isn't a product announcement, it's just speculation).

Skyscrapers. How, practically, to make them work?

CastleWorks Ultimate has shown how to do a 3-4 story tower flawlessly...sturdy, durable, and not at all likely to have a problem.

But when you start stacking floor on floor on floor...well, I can see how a twenty-story building is going to be a really big challenge for Cardstock to pull off.

Any thoughts? Ideas? I'd be quite interested in hearing if people would even WANT skyscrapers beyond the first 3-4 floors...and if they did have them, how they think they could be made to work.

Off the top of my head, I'd have to say do 3 stories as one piece, but with removeable floors so that you could still access each one individually. Use support beams like on the CWU towers.

Have to agree with Kane: build larger sections. It's not as if you're going to actually work your way through each and every level during the game, right?

3 floors at a time sounds useful. Unless you're planning to make a 6-foot tower, of course... For stability, you probably want to glue the bottom floor down to a decent size tile, use popsicle sticks to reinforce the tower sections, and use decent size skewers to connect sections together (a hefty version of , essentially). For added strength, you could try experimenting with filling up the models with insulation foam or somesuch.

It would seem like there would be a practical limit to how tall is tall enough, as well.

One tall building is no big deal to work around. Having a 3'x3' area of tall buildings that you're trying to move minis around would be challenging. And that's not counting having figures go indoors.

Skyscrapers:

You could design the cardstock walls to be pasted to a foamcore wall. So you can create as tall as a building as you want by how large a piece of foamcore you use. A 30" tall piece of foamcore will produce a 30" tall building.

Just an idea.

All this talk of Skyscrapers makes me think of rooftop battles. Where the layout is nothing but the tops of the tallest buildings. And there is no bottom(sort of like the Morpheus level in UT).

As far as building modular skyscrapers I think the CWU buildings would be sufficient for a 4-5 modula stack. And that would pretty much represent 8-10 stories. And there could be the "CWU Simple towers" route. Which could be placed as toppers to the stacked modules to make the 20-40stories...but then you are breaking away from what would be practical in a game playing sense, but might look extemely cool. Or used by themselves as smaller/and -or/taller buildings.

Ok, now I am really excited about the possibilites.

The "other" set out there for skyscrapers uses a stacked option (one skyscraper segement sits on another). This works quite well, but that particular set looks cartoonish.

This could work quite well for a WW set but with better art! This set would work quite well for Heroclix and other supers games. As long as the base was secured well (mounted on foamcore?) then the tower should stand quite well for a few stories, adding more weight to the bottom would work as well.

The goal should be to create skyscrapers with segments so you could make them as large as you want.

I agree that we would need a series of skyscraper topsas Andorax mentioned and interior sets to use as Janx mentioned.

I have that "other" set, and the stacked segments work okay as long as I glue some craft sticks or foamcore scrap to the inside of the base segment to reinforce it.

The cartoonish look of that set kinda bugs me too, Hist. In one way it sort of fits the four-color superhero genre, but sometimes it's a distraction--especially if you're using it for a serious supers roleplaying game.

I'm *this* close to making pro masterboard tiles with that set though, just to have a sturdy, modular cityscape for my HeroClix games. I want to wait for a WorldWorks version (that's a guaranteed purchase for me if 1.5" scale is offered), but I need something to hold me over until then!

I believe Denny has stated that modern sets will be 1.5".

I did a pro masterboard set of those for my FLGS and their Heroclix players. They really enjoyed them when they did their Galactus Attacks scenarios.

I used foamcore bases ('natch) and popsicle sticks on the inside walls. I mounted the buildings to the tiles and put some metal washers in them to weigh them down.

Eventually they wear out and the kids are unforgiving to the work involved. The store wants me to replace them but wanted more "realistic" sets. I showed them the WWG site and they are also hoping for a WWG release.

That cartoonish look is the thing that keeps me from getting that *other* set. The same thing goes for the rest of their urban settings. I'm afraid at some point I might have to break down at do it - at least as a stop gap measure until WWG launches something similar.

I have several sets from that other compeny as they are things that interest me that WWG has not done yet.

My biggest complaint is the "cartoonish" look of the pieces. I very much respect different styles. Look at Mel and Pauls' works, different styles but they compliment each other.

For gaming in 2D I prefer the look of SKG. Their tiles are not as highly detailed as WWG but they work quite well and I enjoy them. This other company for the skyscrapers and other modern builds looks like it tries to be "realistic" but misses the mark.

If Denny can ever get other designers on board that don't disappear on him, maybe we'll see some great looking modern stuff

I think I might go ahead and do up that skyscraper set pro masterboard style--I have my 1.5" Chunky Dungeons masterboard done already, so I might as well use the heck out of it for all my clix games.

When Denny's modern set comes out I can donate my other set to the local game store--and when I bring the WWG one in they can compare the 'new hotness' to the 'old and busted' . . . .

So, in light of all the new Urban Mayhem announcements, has any more thought been given to the possibility and practicality of skyscrapers?

Welcome to the forum, White Rabbit! Your English is very good. I can't even attempt French, so you're doing very well, indeed!

I'm hoping for skyscrapers, too! There's some exciting stuff ahead for WorldWorks, but it may take a while, so be patient. (I know it's hard!) Denny and crew are working full steam ahead on a few different projects. Once those are done, hopefully we'll see the skyscraper project move forward!
