I just heard about this company a couple of days ago, and I've been looking over some of the demo PDF's that I can get from here and I think I'm quite impressed overall.

I have a few comments and questions, however:

I have been considering buying the Chunky Dungeons set, but am concerned about the fact that it appears to be designed for 1.5" scale. This doesn't mesh very well with the scale of all the miniatures I currently have. I noticed that some sets were done in 1", however. Is there any possibility of releasing a 1" scale version for people that don't want to muddle with trying to scale the images down by hand? (also, I imaging a straight reduction in size would sacrifice some quality). Also, looking at what the chunky-dungeons set appears to come with, I don't notice any diagonal pieces. Will this also be available at some point? If there are no plans to make chunky dungeons in 1" format,, I'm not entirely sure it would be appropriate for my use... but there doesn't appeear to be any other "dungeon" systems produced here.

How viable is it to use thick cardboard instead of foamcore? The obvious advantage to cardboard is price -- basically it's free, if one knows where to go -- ut are there any serious disadvantages? Also, for the models themselves could one use just regular paper and glue it onto cardboard (thin cardboard, obviously), instead of using cardstock?

Something that also concerns me is the dynamics of reverse scoring... since one has to score on the opposite side to where the printing is,, it might be difficult to get the cuts in the right place. Are there any tricks one can employ to make sure that the scoring happens at exactly the right places when you have to do it on the other side?

Are there any recommended measures one can take to waterproof these things or somehow make resistant to liquid damage? Accidents sometimes happen at the gaming table, after all, and a single drink spill would almost certainly spell disaster for something made of paper. Considering the effort that appears to go into getting them correctly cut, folded, and put together with precisiion in the first place, this is a situation I would hope to avoid before it happens.

One final point... on a much less serious note, in reading over some of the instruction pdf's that I could download. I couldn't help but notice that the gold-band ring on the builder's left hand appears to have some engraving around its perimeter. This wouldn't by any chance spell out the infamous "Ash nazg durbatulûk..." quote from Lord of the Rings, would it?

At first, I had the same reservations about Chunky Dungeons that you did. It came very close to me getting Gothic Realms at the time (though I've got them both now). Gothic Realms may be more up your alley for a dungeon that's based on a true 1" scale. Plus, you get sewers!

I've been working on modifying Chunky Dungeons for a 1" scale. I call it MiniChunk, and you can read about it . It is quite a bit of work to mod the files in Photoshop, but I've found the results to be quite worth it.


The other option is to just use the 1.5" grid, and simply say that 1 square = 5 feet (assuming D&D scale?). Some people prefer to have more "elbow room" for their minis.

I tend to have issues with warping when I use cardboard, but others have hit on methods that work well enough for them. Overall, though, foamcore is sturdier and will last longer.

Using paper on foamcore for floors and such is a nice way to save on cardstock, but when you buy a ream of it for $5, it'll last you quite a long time. I wouldn't worry about scrimping on it, especially if you're going with cardboard.

I have a method for reverse scoring that I use to good effect. I never thought about sharing it, though. No one ever asked!

I use a mechanical pencil to mark the edge of the paper (after I cut that part out)where I need to do the reverse scoring. Once the edge is marked, I can turn over the piece, and more clearly follow that mark onto the back of the piece with the pencil.

Once I can see both ends marked, I just line up the ends on either side of the ruler, and score away!

Waterproofing? There, you may be on your own. If you want, though, maybe you could set your build on a piece of cardboard with wax paper around it. Your build would sit on top and cover it, but be off of the table in case of a spill. That just might work!
