Yeah, but it's so nice to be able to drive for 30 minutes to be at a Gulf Beach! Course, with Wilma, I might just be able to walk to a beach, it'll be one off of Tampa Bay, but at least I'm above the flood level. At least that's what the County & State governments say!

Seriously though, I am a native born and bred... Although I moved 3 hours north of Ft. Lauderdale where I was raised, I cannot imagine moving from the state....

My wife shares your apprehention. She's from Florida, and she has a lot of family there.

She says, "Don't go outside and watch the hurricanes, like all the male members of my family seem to do (they can't seem to comprehend the stupidity of it). Let the morons on the Weather Channel stand outside in the hurricane winds and tell you how bad it is while you are safe inside or upstate."

Yeah, I don't do the outside to watch a hurricane either, not a healthy concept. Only times I've gone outside is when I've had to, something that's not fun to do and it's never been during the major part of the storm, like you know, when it's passing overhead!

By the way, went way far south of us, once again. Something about Tampa Bay just keeps them away. Makes me happy I'm living there again.

When hurricane Andrew went through Homestead, South Miami, I was there. We were on the north edge of the storm and I had to go outside before it reached us and secure a door that had come open. That wasn't fun and was very dangerous trying to grab the door as it swung back and forth on its hinges. But I managed to get it closed and back inside safe and sound.

Course, the people living on the 3rd floor of the building had to run down to the 2nd floor during the storm as it ripped their roof off! But since we were on the first floor, the only thing I was worried about was one of our doors getting broken in. Never happened, and really won't have, but made me worry none the less.

I haven't heard about what damages were suffered in the southern part of the state, but hopefully, we Floridians came through it ok.

Another thought came to me about being outside during storms, which is why I won't do it during a hurricane. I worked as a security guard when I was in my early 20s. Had to go outside a few times during severe thunderstorms. Those aren't fun, and have even less power than a hurricane, but even with their power, they'll pull shingles off of roofs and send them flying.

Something that I'd see at the place I was guarding. That's not something you want to see as they become some really nasty projectiles!
