Is anyone else having difficulty getting the top navigation to appear on the WorldWorks Main page?

The rest of the page shows up just fine, but the drop down navigation is totally missing.

I have rebooted, cleared the cache on my machine, cleared the temporary internet files, and still cannot get them to display.

The only way I was able to get to the forums was by following the link in the "WorldWorks In Print!" article.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hmm, seems there is something goofy going on. Checking from work, I find that the menus drop down, but they're getting cut off by the frames below - the news and poll and whatnot.

I'll check at home when I get there, and see what it looks like.

Could I get you guys to post your browser type and version so we can diagnose this?  I'm looking at it with IE 6 and it's working just fine.

Hmmm....Are you guys still having problems? I checked the site late last night and I there was some kind of CGI wrapper error. I couldn’t even access my FTP to diagnose the problem and the forum was down as well.

Today everything seems to be ok. I’m not sure if my host was playing with the server or what was going on. Please let me know if you are still experiencing issues with the homepage. Thanks for the heads up.

Well. I shut my PC off for a while and tried again, and that resolved the problem for a while.  However, when I tried to view the page this morning, the nav bar is missing again.

I am running on IE 6.0.28.  I guess it could be something to do with coming across our proxy server or the firewall.  Guess that's what I get for browsing at work!  

At home here I have no problem. At work yesterday it was all about dropdown menus dropping behind the frames below them.

Home = IE 6.0.2800.1106
Work = IE 5.something I think

Hmmmmmm...I invested a chunk of money into a custom navigation system that was "supposedly" 99.9% compatible with all systems and platforms.

I went with the whole drop down menu concept because it seemed like the best option with a data dense and growing site.  I'll have to do some more research I guess

(If anyone has stumbled upon a nifty navigation system on the web lately let me know)

By the way, I've been having a persistent problem with the drop down menus, where they sometimes drop down to the left of where they should be.

Hmm... just noticed why: My usual window size is actually narrower than the WWG frontpage layout (680 pixels), so I need to scroll right to get to the "About" button. If I click on the partially visible Community button, the drop down menu appears flush with the right side of the visible part of the page, meaning it actually lines up underneath the "Tutorials" button. That part is somewhat acceptable (it's just trying to display the full menu, rather than having most of it dropping off the page).

However, when I scroll right to see the rest of the page, the menus *still* open  in the same position. So when I scroll right and click the "About" button, the menu opens up halfway between the "Tutorials" and "Community" buttons, even though there's plenty of space below the "About" button itself. If I then want to select one of the menu items, I have to jump quickly from the button itself to the menu an inch or so to the left, or it'll disappear before I get there.

This behavior also makes it virtually impossible to select the FAQ entry in the Tutorials menu: As soon as I move the cursor down into the Tutorials menu, the "Beginners Guide" submenu is displayed... directly on top of the "Tutorials" menu! (Because it thinks there's no space to display it further to the right.) And because my cursor now lands on the first entry of the "Beginners Guide" submenu, it displays the "Materials Guide" sub-submenu. Result: If I move the cursor down from the "Tutorials" button, I jump directly to the "Video Tutorial" selection 3 levels down. The only way I've found to actually select the FAQ entry is to rapidly move the cursor in a circular motion: exit the button to the *top*, move the cursor around all the other buttons to below the button bar (don't want to move over any other buttons!), and click on FAQ *from below*. Takes a bit of practice, because you have to do this in the less than one second that the menu remains up after you've moved off its button.!

Wow...that sounds really painful Conaill. What screen resolution are you using?

Wouldn't call it *painful*, just annoying at times. Fact is, I don't really use the drop down menus all that often.

Resolution is not a problem, I've got a nice big monitor on my desk. I just seem to use my browser differently than other people. I typically have 20-30 separate netscape windows open simultaneously on a number of virtual desktops, with each netscape window taking up about half of the screen. Allows me to keep an eye on several threads at a time and switch between them rapidly.

*Most* webpages I check don't have a problem with a window that's less than 700 pixels wide. A few, like the WWG frontpage, are hardcoded to a specific size, which means that I either have to scroll to see the whole page, or if the window is too wide you lose a lot of space on the sides. It also means I have less tolerance for extraneous "fluff" on websites that into screen realestate. Seems like about half of the WWG frontpage is take up by fancy borders and other graphics.

Ok, enough bitching for now. I really love your website, but mainly for the content, not for the presentation. I would *still* visit it, even if it were just plain text!
