This new hobby has terminated my old Epson Stylus 740 printer, so I was going to ask everyone if you had any recommendations for a new printer. Set-up cost is not a problem, but low ongoing costs are.


On the way to the keyboard, however, my brain has been derailed by the following item in this week's New Scientist:

So, a new spin-off for WorldWorks in the future?

I have a HP photosmart 7550 I got about a year or so ago. It prints great, doesn't jam with the 110 lb cardstock but it is fairly expensive to buy ink for. I dont print photo quality on the card ( I tried a bunch of different settings and couldnt tell the difference in color or detail when I printed "best" photo quality or "normal" with automatic paper selection) so I don't go thru the expensive photo ink unless I am printing something presentation quality for my design classes. It also reads 3 different types of flash memory card, and has a mini LCD screen that displys the photos from your digital camera.

It's way more printer than you'll ever need to print WWG terrain, but its multifunctionality meets all of the demands of my school work and hobby interests.

I was actually considering a new color laser printer for home, with these models as the driving force. I currently do all my printing at work on that color laser and sometimes I need something reprinted, etc. and I have to wait.

But then common sense kicked in. I may still do it for the convenience of having it networked in the house but it's something I need to discuss with the other breadwinner.

Luckily I can buy from the same company work buys from, at the same discount levels as work. So HP is actually possible. It's just the ongoing toner costs that worry me.

And we would still need the ink jet for printing photo quality since the laser printers just aren't that good at it.

I got the HP 2600n tonight. Best Buy had $100 instant rebate (ie - sale price) through today and we just got another insurance check we weren't expecting. So hubby sent me off to buy my printer.

I didn't get it through work because this was cheaper, believe it or not.

One good thing is that it comes with full toner cartridges, not the 'starter' ones that are only about 1/3 the size. That's one heck of a savings.

I still plan on doing the bulk of my printing at work as long as I can do it. But this will work for the additional stuff or spur of the moment printing. Very cool!

Way ahead of you Aleph. I'm not combining if I can help it. But I will be doing a comparison to see how badly they would stand out if I had to.

I did 150 pages at work today and the only reason I stopped was I ran out of cardstock.

I went to Best Buy to look over the digital cameras and got distracted... I am now being seduced by the Canon Pixma 500. Does anyone have any hands on experience with it? My only experience with Canon printers was at my previous place of employment, but they were favorable.

I currently use a HP PSC 1210, which cost about the same when new, my primary reason for looking at the Canon is that it has seperate cartridges for each color, hopefully this will end up saving money in the long run.

I'm pretty sure I'll be going with a Dell color laser printer. My current printer is still working ok, but it's not a network printer, it's not a laser printer and my price per page is higher than the Dell color one would be.

Plus, I get corporate discounts when ordering Dell products and I have a Dell Preferred account that I'm sure they're just Jonesing for me to use!

I could get it right now, but I'm waiting till my wife gets a little more time in her job. My birthday is in a little over 2 months, so...

But congrats on the new printer Grump!

I've done some printing each weekend for 3 weeks now with the new Lexmark X2350, and I have to say, it does a pretty good job for having no black ink. First I printed the Portal set. A bit dark, but I think it is supposed to be. Second week, I printed the trebuchet, and the textures were about as perfect as I would ever expect. This past weekend, I printed walls and floors of the Harbormaster set and was pretty happy, although I think the blue is off just a bit. We'll see what else I do, but it is all functional, and I will happily start building again. Now to continue to print off instructions at work on the copier instead of burning up all that ink at home. Payday is almost here and that dice tower is calling to me......
