Are there any plans in the works for a mid-sized ship of some sort? We have the Maiden (a very large ship) and the smaller boats from the Skull Cove set but nothing in between.
Any chance we might see a Sloop or a Brigantine in the near future?

Trimming the Maiden:

A request for an "in between" ship neither so large as the Maiden, nor so small as the Verylongboat of Skull Cove?

After much staring and cogitating, I have yet to come up with a good kitbash that will stretch out the Verylongboat. I haven't given up yet, just taken a break.

However, I present these entirely theoretical notes on how one might go about "trimming" the Maiden down to make for a smaller vessel. Use at your own risk, but if it DOES work (then again, even if it DOESN'T), please report bank with your feedback on the results of the efforts.

Throughout, I will be using the 1" grid version of the Maiden. YMMV on making these adjustments on other variations.

We start with the Decks:

lowerdeck1inch: Print only the Rear and Forward Hull sections. Then cut the centermost 3 squares out, bow to stern.
upperdeck1inch: Print all pages.
From the Sterncastle Deck section, cut out the two areas in the top-left and top-right corners (everything directly above the rectangular white spaces). Discard the rest and bring the two pieces together.
From the Forecastle deck, cut away the top two rows of squares, and cut out the center three. Preserve only the two remaining "rounded triangle" sections. Bring them together.
From MiddleDeck #1, cut away the outermost column of squares on either side and the centermost column, uniting columns 2, 3, 5 and 6.
Preserve at least one circle/hex mast mount, to serve as a template, from the scrap pile.
roofing1inch: Print all pages.
From the Forecastle Roof, cut away the twop two rows of squares. Cut the bottom piece to fit the Forecastle section from the previous step.
From the Sterncastle Roof, cut away the two tabs, as was done with the Sterncastle, above.
From the Steerage Parts, assemble only the top section and the wheel. Discard the lower section.
assembly: Connect all parts as described above, generally following the directions as layed out in the instructions. The wheel and wheel base is mounted at the very forward-most portion of the much-reduced steerage deck.
Center the preserved circle/hex mast mount right behind the hold vent in the reassembled MiddleDeck section. Glue into place and cut out accordingly.

Next, the Hull:
forwardhull: Print the first four forward hull pages (leave off the Ratline Ledges sections)
Carefully cut away the last (biggest) three "triangles" worth of of the forward hull on both the left and right sides, taking care to match the angle of the original as closely as possible, and to leave a "folding tab" similar to the one you are removing from the upper-right corner of the Left Forward Hull piece.
Measure 1 1/2 squares from center on either side of the Hull Brace, cut away center section and discard. Use the remaining two pieces as normal.
Measure out and eliminate a 3 square section of the Forward Bracing Wall that includes all of one door (and none of the other). You might want to leave a tab piece to more easily unite the remaining portions.
frontrails: Print and assemble as normal. Fit to the Trim Maiden as it feels appropriate, cutting away excess that does not meet up well with your design. Take care to be sure you cover up the necessary sections of the forward hull where Ratlines were to appear...the front rails won't meet up properly without some trimming back.
rearhull: Print both pages. Cut out the centermost inch width of the Backhull section and affix the rudder and back hull walls as normal.
hullsides: Do not print the Middle Left and Middle Right Pages.
Assemble the Rear and Forward sections together directly. Print only one page of braces, use only one pair of ratlines (in the only designated section), use only one Mast Support (and center it carefully under the one mast hole/location you created in the last step).

Now, our greatly dimished Sterncastle:
Cut away and discard the middle three inches of the first page. Unite the two remaining halves.
Cut away and discard the bottom half (below the middle fold line) of pages 2 and 4.
Do not print pages 3 or 5 at all. Print page 6 and mount it centered on the wall.
You should only require four braces at the most from page 7.

And our heavily cutback Forecastle:
The much-diminished Forecastle only requires the middle-most 4 squares worth of page 1, half of each part of page 2, and about the middle 3 squares of page 3 (fit to the space as defined by the deck piece).
The Forecastle supports are still required.
You should need only one of the Forecastle ladders. Use the other for the Sterncastle...or print an extra set if desired and put a pair on the extreme sides of each.
Assemble and affix the Bowsprit normally.

Next, the Masts:
Or, actually, just the Mast. Only the Upper and Topper sections are required, as well as the upper spar and upper crow's nest. This goes in the center mast location.

And the Sails:
The double-sail (page 5-6) and it's gathered variation (page 10) is recommended. I would preserve the full-width sail myself, but if you feel this looks too wide for the Trim Maiden, eliminate the middle 2" or so.




There you go...a diminished Maiden. I don't know if this will work at all, but it seems to be a logical set of instructions. Again, I would greatly appreciate comments and opinions from anyone who actually attempts these directions.

I had some suggestions on how I would try to adapt the Maiden to fit the dimensions of the ship we're using in our campaign (if I ever get enough of a life again to do any actual modeling, rather than just posting here... ). The plan involved printing out a 1.5" version, but scaling it at 5/7 scale on the printer. That way we'd get a total width of 5" instead of 7", and squares that are close enough to 1" not to matter.

I still needed to be able to cut a total of 7" from the original length, including 2" from the aftcastle, so I would wind up 21" long ship, or 15" after scaling to 5/7th. This was all based on speculation before seeing the final model. But from your description it sounds like it's not too hard to cut a few inches here and there.

It was a little hard to follow your instructions in my head without the model in front of me... how many inches did you wind up cutting from the length of the model? (For the width, I think I would prefer to stick to my original scaling-down idea. Gives a higher detail model, a less boxy ship, and less chance of messing things up.)
