I'm trying to figure out what the best markers are for edging. I'm having terrible bleeding problems with Sharpies (plus, I can't find a gray one).

I came across from a while back, but I didn't get a definitive sense of how the various brands compare.

So, which markers do you all use? Sharpies, Crayola, Letraset, Prismacolor, other? Specifically, I'd like to know how much they bleed, and how broad their color selctions are.

I use Prismacolors, primarily. Mainly the Cool Gray 80%, Cool Gray 60%, Sienna Brown, Olive Green and occasionally Sand (for lighter edging). I use Sharpies for Black, Blue, Red, Orange and a few other colors that aren't encountered as much.

Prismacolors bleed quite a bit when they're brand spanking new, but with a little use they don't bleed much at all. I like the Cool Gray 80% a lot (its the one I use the most), its a near black that blends nicely to a wide range of colors. The Sienna Brown is a medium brown that I use almost as much, and it also blends nicely with a wide range of colors.

I was at Hobby Lobby today getting scenery supplies (chipboard and matboard) and got some markers as well. I got a fat tipped sharpie for sharp edges and a brush tipped marker for corners etc. The brush tipped marker is quite spiffy.

I use the Sharpies and Expo Dry Erase markers. The dry erase ones are for long edges and pieces that can't afford any bleeding. I found that sometimes the sharpies like to bleed, when the Expo dry instantly

I just had to share. I picked up all 18 colors of Sharpie (fine point, unfortunately) for the remarkable price of *dramatic pause* $2.00. I so love flea markets!

I use Sharpies... I'd like to find a nice grey one, but it has to be waterproof as well. How is the waterproofness of the other brands?

Just curious, why waterproof?

Because here in Sin City, the air-conditioned garage conditions I game in can get up to 90 degress farenheit, and my fingers get sweaty. Sweaty fingers and water-soluble markers means that the marker leaves the model, gets on my fingers, and subsequently everywhere else on the model. Yep, bad experiences...

Someone would need to test the Prismacolors, they don't say on them. Can't say I've had a problem, but then I don't remember any situation that would have been a valid test either.

I started out using Sharpies, but got way too much bleed on them...although I didn't try the really fine-tipped models...maybe that would make a difference.
Currently, I'm using the Crayola Fine-line markers--got a 10-pack last year at Wal-Mart during a school supply close out. Think it cost me about $1.

Haven't had too many complaints--obviously, if you edge too heavy-handed it will bleed (and I've had one or two folds disintegrate completely when I was hurrying), but I haven't seen too much bleeding.

I have used a broad-tipped black Sharpie (the chisel-tip model) to color parts of a model black inside (where there is a chance that that white inside is going to be visible and distract from a masterful edging job! It will bleed a little bit and darken the print on the front side, but it's not too much of a distraction. On a couple of models, the added "shadow" really enhanced the look. Plus, as I said, there's no annoying visible panty lines....I mean, umm......

Agreed on the chisel tip.

I use the bit one to edge my foamcore on the UM:MA apartment roofs. Its the prefect wide to cover the whole edge.

I still say Prismacolor pens are the way to go. Yes they are more expensive but they last an incredibly long period of time. If you want to punch up your modeling to a higher level I would recommend investing in the core colors; Cool Grey, Warm Grey, Sepia (brown), Yellow Ochre, Dark Green, Crimson Red, Light Aqua should fit the bill for most sets. And when all else fails you can always default to simple chiseled black felts (of any brand). Black will take care of most of your needs in a pinch.

I picked up four Prismacolor pens per Denny's recommendation. I'll give those a go on my next set of builds and see if they bleed less than the Sharpies.

I've been using sharpies and they do bleed, but I tend to very lightly run them along the edge and it's not so bad. I mentioned to my wife that Denny told me I should take her Prismacolor pens and she wasn't very happy She does a lot of artwork so already has things like that, but I keep taking more and more of her supplies, like cutting mats for example

On Chunky 1" so far I've been edging in black.

I thought about using gray on the walls - but I find the black contributes to a cell shaded look to things - which has its own cachet. Both the textures and the chunkiness has a cartoonish quality to them, so cell-shade look fits.

Speaking of cartoonish textures - some of these models would look very cool if reskinned using World of Warcraft's texture sets...
