Started my first Mayhem build yesterday, scary and frustrating!

As my buildings are going to be mounted on foamcard for durability I realise how difficult it is working to my parameters and trying to build models which have been designed to be built as fold up models.

1. So those of you who have used foamcard some questions befor i continue my build programme.

2. Do you mount the cardstock oversized to the foam card and trim (similar to the technique for roadtiles), or cut the foam card and cardstock to size and mount it together?

3. Do you use the tabs on the wall sheets?

4. Do you join the cardstock together and then put it on to your foamcard like a sleeve?

I am sure I have more questions but I would be grateful if someone can get me started. These questions all came about as I decided to be a little ambitous and started my build on a 21" x 14" Wharehouse........ Silly/stupid (select one) I know!

Hopefully I will continue to get some good advice from you guys!

For Mayhem, I always build the model fully - flooring and all - before basing it. Then I base it on a cut-to-size foamcore tile. Personally, I find it fairly difficult to trim the foamcore with a model already on it. I also find it more effective to edge the foamcore before mounting the model.

I do this for street tiles, too, actually. I cut the foamcore into squares first, edge them, then spray glue two at a time and put the street tile on it.

OOps, should have been a little more specific perhaps.

I am mounting not only the roadtiles to foamcore but also the exterior and interior walls of buildings.

As these will be used for gaming and conventions they have to be DURABLE.

Oh, for interiors I can't help you. I only base them with foamcore, I don't reinforce the interior/siding.


But I've occasionally wondered how much that really helps. Its more time and effort to do it - and its not going to save a model if someone sits, falls or steps on it.

This isn't excatly what you where looking for, but it should be a help anyway. Shatteredragon builds using matboard (similar to the material used in boardgames game boards) and his instructions on matboard builds may be able to answer a few questions for you.





Now all we gotta do is get him chained bck to his desk and build something else for us to wonder over.

Edit: There was also another post about mounting onto foamcore (specifially it was about making the corners) but I can't seem to find it now, if I do run across it later I will add a link.

Had some ideas on this following your responses.

1. mount card stock on to artboard (card) for the outside and then trim

2. mount card stock on to artboard (card) for the inside and then trim

3. Glue the 2 artboards together which will have the cardstock graphics for the interior and exterior.

Any suggestions to possible flaws in this?

Make sure you use a very dry glue type, three layers of glue can create some very interesting warping, otherwise, the plan is completely feasable. Windows and doors will probably be easy as well with this method. I recommend a small room, easy to build with at least one window and door as a test if your planning on trying this method permanently. That's what I did with matboard on my first build with it, and that was an all exterior (no interior art) build. It was the keep from the original CastleWorks.

Not quite sure what you mean by artboard though so I can't really help you clearly here. Took me months to find out the name of the material I use (matboard ), before I think I used to call it thick paper or posterboard .
