Sad that holidays have become nothing more than a day off. Of course, lots of them are Christian holidays so naturally not everyones going to celebrate those...

And you are correct about peoples recollection of holidays. A while back Rush "Drug Adict" Limbah did a show where they ask people what they thought about the 4th of July. 80% said it was "A day off from work and a reason to get drunk". WOW!

Oh I wasn't be serious about the can of whupass day I know we only really won a handful of battles (Princeton, Trenton, Kings Mountain, Cowpens and Yorktown) are the only ones I can recall that weren't at best "successfull withdraws".

Funny bit of History, Our great Decatur (I'm pretty sure it was him) was in England on a diplomatic tour in about 1800, saw Tarleton and his supporters for his parliement campaign marching down tjhe street. One of the supporters was waiving a flag that portrayed tarleton on horseback, treading upon several prone Americans and their flag. Decatur thrashed the flag waiver, then threatened to run through and/or pistol Tarleton. Before we was set upon by the now angry mob of Tarleton fans, Tarleton took him aside to explain that flag was homeade and not authorized or endorsed by him. They then drank, and the mob and Tarleton decided they admired Decatur's "pluck" and proceeded to carry him and Tarleton through the streets (very British thing, and I can visualize that quite well, after rounds at the pub)

Anyway, thats my amusing American/English goodwill anecdote for the day, and entirely true.

During that time England was led by a messed up king, and a bunch of back stabbing polititians. They let the entire empire fall to pieces while so busy trying to out do each other. Basically, England pulled out support from many fronts to save itself from anarchy at home, and it was largely the lack of support, and the French getting too involved, that caused some major losses. At least, this is my opinion based on the history I have been taught. Every country will have been taught this very differently to make their own country look better... although my teachings don't exactly make England look better.

As for holiday's and their names, it is very bizarre, and sad. I don't mind non-Christian's celebrating Christmas as a purely gift giving occassion, but I do HATE it when anyone calls it Xmas, The Holidays or something else. They even started renaming Christmas Trees as Holiday Trees. I'm not going to go on a long rant, but I feel it should be called by it's name.

If it's being renamed because it has Christ in the title, shouldn't we also rename SAINT Valentine's Day. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't saints just a tiny bit connected to religion as well?

Anyway, I hope everyone has a really fun and enjoyable 4th of July, and in fact, I'll go a step further, and wish them a happy 4th through 8th, then back to boring life at work on Monday 9th.
