OK, first off, the pictures are fairly cruddy. I couldn't find my tripod. (found it since, but was on my way to work, so no chance to re-take pics).

Quick recap: My brother and I got on the subject of dice towers after I mentioned how one of our group has an unfortunate tendency to ricochet his dice off of minis & scenery, often causing mishaps like trees shifting a few scale yards to one side (or falling down), etc.

After looking at a few dice roller models online (some made from wood kits and one from Hirst molds) I began to see a fairly simple way to do one in WWG. So after rooting through some printouts of older sets (classic CastleWorks & DungeonWorks) that I had lying about, I started fiddling with it on Saturday. I finished it up Saturday night.

Actual build time was only about 1 1/2 hours, but I was snatching a minute here and a minute there as I could. Also, I was making up construction elements as I went along, so that slowed me down a little.

Anyway, here it is:




The tower, as you can see is the basic one from the original CW. Inside are two "baffles" cut from a gridless Pubs & Inns floor tile, as well as the "exit ramp" (same pattern). The ramp and baffles are mounted on two pieces of cardboard that are glued to opposite walls of the tower's insides to add stability. The baffles are just short ramps that the dice bounce down and along then out the ramp into the "courtyard" which is some modified classic DungeonWorks walls (done "Clip-It") style) with a Gothic checkboard floor tile. The whole thing got mounted on foam core and voila!

There are several things I'd do differently now that I've been through the process, but the finished product works really well. I poured handfuls of dice through it (including some monster-sized ones) and tried dropping and placing d4s on the ramps in order to test the baffles "spin." Everything held up great and even d4s get some roll out of it.

If I try it again, I'll go for a cleaner look and maybe make an X-mas present of it for someone in my group.

Now that is really cool.

I made the inside of the tower in slightly different manner, instead of just making the barriers diagonal / I made two out of the five triangular instead ^, deflecting one way or the other, and hopefully imparting spin on the D4s.

I gave him one that was built into the GM Screen, the other was free standing for the player's use. The DM' tower drops the dice where he can see them and the players can't. (Sometimes ya just gotta lie... I know that my players wish that I would hide my die rolls more often... For some reason the minor encounters seem to get critical after threat way too often, while the big baddy prepares for battle by buttering his sword and standing on a banana peel.)
