Although the intention is good, that WIP meter doesn't work very well it seems. Like a worn down machine the gauges get a bit sticky don't they. Is there a better way to handle that ... aside from just not looking at it?

Having percentages on the WIP gives the false impression that not even 1% more has been completed since the last update.

If a set takes a year to complete, we should see 1% every 3-4 days.

Just say 'in devoplement' and let it go at that. It reassures without building up a frustrating anticipation.

You could also use a series that mimics an annual calendar in that one or two models from the set are released every month. Plan one such set every year, to be completed by November, in time for holiday sales. The set could be in a different arena all together. With good advance workup and planning it could help. One year a Victorian London series ... nect year Deadlands sort of Western series ... another a Space port or whatever. Take a few weeks to sketch it out, line up your tezture packs. Himmerville would be a thrill ... [1] plan [2] materials [3] one a month [4] Holiday set!

Just a thought. I imagine you keep a catalog of all the textures you have developed. Use them and a few new ones on such a set as this. There would be no need to sacrifice quality. Just another thought. A regular release would take all the heat off your other projects and help even out receipts. It would also make it easier to bring on one more designer, like that Topo fellow. Yep, I remember him ... its hard to forget a good artist.

I hope I don't get all kinds of rotten tomatoes thrown at me, but I actually like the percentage progress bars! I know they're only a very rough estimate of when somethings going to come out - but at least it's something.

I think it's also a bit of a reward system for the developers. I'm sure nothing feels better than bumping up the percentage of a project after pouring several hours into it. So the developer feels some amount of happiness as a project gets nearer to the end and we, the customers, feel happier to know that progress is being made.

I think if a more complicated system was used, then it wouldn't feel very rewarding to the developers as it might require too much of their time to keep it accurately up to date. And the more complex something is to update, the less likely a developer will want to use it. And besides, do we really need to know in exact detail how far a project has come along?

Well, I know I don't. . . But I also know I've got more than enough to work on in the mean-time as I go through all the sets I've bought! So perhaps I'm not watching the progress of things as keenly as some other folks.

I've seen lots of different ways of measuring on the W.I.P. and agree that the percentages, while not perfect, do a better job that other things that have been tried. Seriously, I would rather Denny focus on getting products out the door, and designing his own sets, that worrying about redesigning the W.I.P. again.
