If you want a good starter fantasy/pirate set, you cannot go wrong with Skull Cove. IMO, it is easily the most flexible set WWG has created to-date, and certainly one of the largest. Most of the models in it are relatively simple, but it also has a few challenging ones, too, so it would be good for a beginner.

Interestingly, I was just thinking about this set the other day, and thought about making some of the cliffs with Hellworks-style construction.

I would echo Skull Cove as a very good starter set if the pirate theme is your main interest (the Maiden of the High Seas is also a WONDERFUL set, but it's not the best one to start off with).

More on the fantasy end of things, I would actually recommend looking at either Gothic Realms or Interiorworks: Castles & Keeps. Either one is a great set for building up a dungeon setting, and both are well within a starting modeler's range.

Gothic Realms is a much "darker" setup...skull motif on the walls, traps, sewer-like channels filled with water, muck, glowing green goo or blood at your preference.

Interiorworks: Castles & Keeps is a much 'cleaner' setup. Regular stone walls, more civilized props (tables, chairs, beds, a throne room). Still, it's also very usable to set up dungeon layouts.

Depending on your need, I'd start with one of those three (Skull Cove, Gothic or Castles & Keeps).

I'm all thumbs and nevertheless started with the Maiden. Although it's some flaws it looks great alltogether and is more than sufficient for play.

And opposed to Skull Cove it gives you much more of the "Wow... I have made something great" feeling.
