I know many others have built their paper buildings with foamcore, but I finally got a "how to" together for those that are interested. Hopefully some will find it helpful.

Very nice build. Do you have any tips on how to keep the blade straight up when cutting the foamcore? Even with care I still get beveled edges. I've actually been looking for some kind of tool that would hold a blade at set angles, including 90 degrees. So far all I've found are ones to cut beveled edges for matboard.

When I build my buildings with foamcore I use the scraps from cutting down the interior walls to cover the foamcore edge of the doorways and window openings. Of course if the interior is a different color than the exterior the doors would need to be flush with the exterior rather than inset into the walls. Or I suppose it would be easy enough to photoshop a little section of the wall texture that could be cut into strips to line the openings.

This is a great tool to use - the foamcore manual. I also love the layout and the flash windows.

OH, I really like the look of these.

That added thickness especially the inset windows
really gives the building a solid structural presence.

Are you planning on adding platforms or interior props?

Below is an image from the beginning set-up of a previous game recently. You can see the back of an apartment building. To the right is in the background is the Armory and to the left is the gas station. Also you can see the street lights I got from an architectural/train supply place.

I am workign on adding stuff but inside and outside the buildings, like fire escapes in the back of the apartment building. I have the first one done I just need to finish the second one. I am trying to get all of this done for a convention game I am running the first weekend in Oct.

Have you thought about doing the streets as two leveled formcore? The idea that I have been tossing about is this:

Set the tile upon the cardstock and then cut out the road - leaving a channel of side walk. Then print out another copy of the tile and base the foamcore upon this tile. This way you have a sidewalk and gutters that are raised.

You have set your windows on the backside/inside of the building? Also would you look at making the insides units that could be lifted out as one whole set rather then making it a set structure. I ask this as the way the building is set up from instruction you need to make the insides part of the whole building to add strength to it - your foamcore negates this fact.

These builds look amazing. I think I'm converted - I'll have to do this with all my buildings that have interiors from now on.
