It's pretty darn likely you'll see a mat of this nature at some point this year.

Wings of War playmat are coming out, complete with huge logos in the corners. Judging by the comments left on TMP, people look very interested in this kind of product (minus the large logos).

The overall size looks a bit small for use with other games (Mustangs/Phantoms and Airwar C21) and too much WW1.... the trench lines would prevent its use for other periods.

I still think a more generic design is needed, plus larger sizes. We're just starting Airwar C21 and find a 6'x4' table/mat is the smallest size to allow all the zooming around that aircraft will do. Having two 4'x3' mats that can align together would probably be a better solution for transportation issues. Plus you could offer alternative designs that can link together.

For example a basic countryside mat could align with a sea/beach mat on one side, and an industrial area mat on the other side, providing players with choices dependant on scenarios are being played.

I know some of us play clix games which are meant to be played on a standard floor mat. I think it would be cool to have some customizable floormats with 3-D props to flesh it out. I know that it'd be fairly easy to kitbash pre-existing sets into a set format like this...

ex - a forest with a reversible mat that gives two basic woodland ground layouts...the trees and bushes and stuff could be placed randomly.

It shouldn't be too hard to simply make it gridless and add the 1", 1.5", or hex layered with opacity over top if it's going by a standard playmat size, right?

I use the Wings of War miniatures, but with the Canvas Eagles Rules and a Hex Terrain from (EDITED BY MODERATOR (No competing linkage policy).
The advantage of their mat is I find it more robust than owt I can print and stick together - sorry WWG, but sometimes it's horses for courses
