Hello all. I shall (hopefully) soon be getting my hands on the Streets of Mayhem file/files, but have one question regarding foamcore.

Supposedly using 3/5mm foamcore is the best way to mount your tiles/ensure durability, but how big are the actual street/rail tiles? I want to order some foamcore a.s.a.p but want to ensure I spend less so I can spend more on ink cartridges etc. Can anyone help?

Tiles come in three formats. Gridless, 1" grids, and 1.5" grids.

The gridless and 1" grid tiles are 7" on a side, while the 1.5" gridded tiles are 7.5" on a side.

Foamcore is typically sold in 20" x 30" sheets. Thus, you can usually get 8 tiles out of a single sheet of foamcore. I try to find mine at the dollar store dirt cheap.

Foamcore can also be bought in larger sizes,typicall at art supply stores. These are really handy for big static layouts instead of the tiled approach.


One other possibility to consider would be a mixed approach, combining the ease of construction of static boards and the changability/swapability of tiles...a concept I posted here for doing four-tile blocks to build changable, but fast-building city scapes:

You may also want to shop around for foamcore in your neighborhood and check out some unusual places. Office supply and craft shops typically have the 20x30 sheets, but if you look around a bit, you can also find art supply places that might have it in 30x40 for less than the price of 2 20x30 sheets. I went looking at my local university bookstore, for example, since they have an impressive art department. 20x30 black foamcore was $4.49/sheet. 30x40 was $5.99. I grabbed 3.

If you're fine with working with white foamcore, and your local dollar store doesn't have any, keep an eye open at your local craft places since they can have specials bringing it down to that price or so.

Theres some glitch with the price of their white foamboard. Its a bargain worth taking advantage of. 25 sheets of 32x40 for $2 less than 10 sheets.

Still over a $100 purchase though.
