Hi, everyone. My sons were wanting to try a game of Heroclix, so I bought the Batman Starter Set. It comes with 4 minis divided into two teams of 100 points each, and a small 15" x 15" map. The maps is a little crinkly and won't stay flat, plus it has the basic rules for the starter game on the back, where we won't be able to get at them once we start to play. Looking at the map I thought how much better it would look with WWG textures and 3D pieces, so I decided to give it a shot. If it turns out that they like the game, we already have a huge 1.5" grid layout made using Andorax's City Planning tutorial that I made for Zombie gaming. Here's some pics:

Wizkids map from starter set. There are four areas of hindering terrain pictured showing trees or bushes outlined in light green. Hindering terrain reduces character movement. There is also 1 area of blocking terrain showing a statue and outlined in brown. Blocking terrain blocks Line of sight and provides cover.


Here are a couple views of my version of the map using WWG terrain. The fountain/statue is from Shellendrak Manor and is being used as blocking terrain. The tree arch, tree and grass groundtiles are from Hinterlands are are being used for hindering terrain; street and sidewalk from Streets of Mayhem, and the cool bushes are from LD2062's Exteriorworks Colored Bush Kitbash and are also hindering terrain. I modified the bushes and tree arch in order to match the size from the WizKids map.

Flip side of board: One source I read recommended using just a plain grid for the first game in order to teach new players the basics. I think this is a lot better than a plain grid, and we can add props to it in later games. The groundtiles shown are from the Urban Mayhem Police Department set. Plus, putting groundtiles on the opposite side of the foamcore helps to keep it from warping.

Thanks everyone for the kind remarks. I'll see if I can post some in-game pics.

It was a very easy build. I was able to make it in a couple of nights after work. Not a lot of time required and as I've said before, using WWG for your terrains gives great results, even with minimal skills. And cost was way low, too. Starter pack cost $9, foamcore $1, and I already had print-outs of most of the tiles and other pieces. This was the first time I built your colored bush bash, LD. But I built a bunch extra for when I finally make my Shellendrak. Seeing them IRL now I know they will be perfect for the Manor's grounds. Only other thing I did was to paint the edges of the foamcore board with cheap acrylic craft paint. I may still seal the board with Mod-Podge next week.

As an aside about cost, Denny, you saved me $30. I almost bought the Arkham Asylum vinyl map at a FLGS, but decided I could make a board a lot better and cheaper with WWG and foamcore.

Also to let you know the all the rules to almost all the Wizkids Games are on there website plus they got faqs if you happen to find a hiccup in the game play (and once you really get into playing you will). I would recommend getting them soon because with Topps disbanding wiskids who knows how long before the website is down for good,

Wizkids may be going the way of the dodo, but the Horrorclix fansite www.itswickedfun.net/ is still going strong! You can download PDFs of some of the maps, the giveaway ones and starters, and they have pics of some of the other maps. I'm looking forward to Wildwood Grove in order to make a 3-D of the basic kit graveyard map, and I am going to need Atlantis to make a 3-D Cthulhu R-Lyeh temple map!!!

Yes, I am excitable. If only I didn't need to waste most of my day at a boring job, I could do a lot more building and crafting!

sorry to break it to you, but the only reason windows is at risk is because no one in their right mind wants to pay 5 times as much for the same thing on a Mac. Having used Macs before, it is my experience that they have more problems and bugs than Windows ME. So of course hackers are going to target the more commonly used operating system, since that is what most people use.

I know that there is always the whole Mac vs. Window debate. Mac has always been percived as more expensive - which is true up to a point.
If you go a no-name system with Windows you are always going to win, you are even going to win vs. other Windows from the larger main sellers.

Mac vs. Main Sellers (Dell, HP etc) more often than not the Mac is equal too or a tad cheaper than the Main Sellers when you spec up the models to the same levels.

The other problem with Mac that doesn't help with this whole debate is that you can only really get an Apple product. You cannot go down to the local computer car boot market and slap together a new box (ok you can but it's not designed to do so, you have to hack the OS). The flip side to this is that the OS was designed for the hardware... or the other way around but not really shoe horned into fitting the system.

I use Mac, my younger brother works for Apple Australia so I got a sexy deal. I also run and have run Windows - this has mainly been for gaming (I mean come on who uses a pimped-out computer for anything else really ) and the odd Photoshop/sketchUp job. Once I get a stable job again and when the iMac comes out with the quad cores I will most likely give my dad my old box. Why the OSX is a nicer system to use - I am not a computer tech, I do not type commands or have a clue about such so from a base level of Gaming, internet, Art and torrents I will be happy to use a 24"iMac.

Games on a Mac - yes and no. At the moment I am gaming less and less on the computer for the simple reason that there is less and less "new" games that excite me. It's all been done before or it has no real premises; it's all engine with nothing more too it. FPS have the ability to be so much more and some are, RTS should be a hell of a whole lot more. That said I am only looking forward to StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3 - both of which are going to be released as Mac at the same time. Oh and I use left and right click on my Mac.

I know there are die hard fans of macs out there. However, I do have to admit that none of the games I like are on them. One I tried on a Mac was the new one called Spore, which for some unknown reason caused the system to totally freak out and die?! Geeze, my Spore creations are not that bizarre let alone X-rated, like some out there.

I am not die hard. I like Apple products as they are well designed and work well together. I use both OS and I must say I am leaning more to OSX than windows for many end user reasons.

That all said when the new iMacs come out, if they are not to the spec/price I am aiming for then I will get another pc (yum cha) just for gaming and knock out Photoshop items.
