I know I have complained about this before but foam board is just too dang expensive in the UK! I could get Foamboard from $0.50 (cheap stuff) to $1.50 a sheet. I have only found a few places that carry it here in Oxford and they charge £4.00 and higer per sheet! now 1 GBP=1.95 right now, you do the math.

I simply can not tell myself that spending £4.00 for one sheet that will only base a few tiles is worth it.

What other options are there?

If anyone knows of a store where I can get it cheaper then please let me know!

I have used mattboard but its not as strong as the foamboard.

Over here the stuff is RM35.00 a sheet (about $8.00), which when considering that the wages here are MUCH lower than in the USA or UK.......

Luckily I have a mate who passes me all his companies old exhibition posters which are mounted on Foamcore............. but how long will his supply last before I'm forced to buy it (plus its only the white stuff, no black foamcore in sight)?

Correx, coroplast, or corlite are Corrugated plastic sheets so I don't think you would need to worry about it warping from moisture.

3mm - 6mm is some of the standard thickness.

It comes in alot of colors from white, green, brown and black. Cool thing is that it as slots in it already to do a Linx style without having to cut the ties for them. You could buy a package of cheap chop sticks or dowel rods.

I remeber a roomate had bought a huge sheet of the stuff back in the States. I'm finding out that things are easier to come by back in the states. I will have to try some of the DYI stores in the area (if I can find them)

Well on ebay.co.uk I bought 44 A4 sheets of PVC Foam Board. Came to be about £0.65 per sheet (including VAT and Shipping). It is suppose to be stronger than Foam Board yet still be able to be cut by a hobby knife.

Still like the idea of the Correx then I could base both sides and use the hard plastic slots for connecting them together. Maybe next time.

Also found 280 gsm white craft paper (A4) 100 sheets for £16.25 (that includes the shipping)

They do 10 A1 sheets for about £5 per sheet (about 60p per A4 sheet). A little less expensive than your pvc stuff and it's true foamboard in black.

I use the high st chain Partners for card. They sell packs of 50 sheets 200gsm card for £4.99. Rymans also sell 200gsm card in packs of 50 for £6.99, but every now and then they do a 3 for 2 deal which makes them cheaper than Partners. 280gsm is a little thicker than the recommended 110lb stuff (which is 200gsm)

Let us know how the pvc stuff works out. It's an interesting option.

Yeah I'm a little bit worried about 280 gsm and my printer. If I still had my old HP 712C I would not be worried, I could have put a cat through that old work horse!

Problem with physical stores is that I do not get out much. I'm the primary care provider for my four kids (ages 2-10) while my wife goes to school so I'm pretty much stuck at home for the most part. I will however make a point to gather the troops and make an expedition out of it

Well Monday I should have all the supplies. I'll let everyone know how well it works. The 280 gsm would be nice for the hills in Dinas Fordd (after I kitbash the lines out of them)

I just got the A4 sheets of 5mm PVC Board. This stuff is AWESOME! It is strong, takes a bit more care but can still be cut with a hobby knife. For £0.65 a sheet it was worth the purchase.

Ok I have cut the PVC board and it was tough, but not impossible.

Here is the problem. The glue (I'm using PVA Tacky Glue) does not stick. It just peels off. What can I use to make it stick on? Rough it up with sandpaper?

I'm open to sugestions.

Have you tried spray adhesive?

If you could get contact cement onto the cardstock, then it would stick. I'm not sure how hard it would be to get onto the cardstock though as it tends to be somewhat heavy/thick to apply.

If you're not sure how to use contact cement, a quick primer.

You apply the cement to both items which you want to glue together, in other words, the cardstock and the PVC. Then you let them both set up till they get slightly tacky/hard. Then very carefully line up both pieces and press them together.

Make sure you've got them lined up before you let them touch, because you won't get them apart without destroying the cardstock! But they bond so strongly, that, well, you'll never get them apart!
