I'm completely new to the site and I have to say I'm amazed at what people can do with a little cardstock and glue on here. I was originally drawn to WWG's products for my new D&D 4e group. I didn't want to shell out hundreds of dollars for the more expensive polystone products but I didn't want something that looked cheap either. WWG seems to be a great compromise.

That said, like others on here, we're starting with KOTS. I want to use my designs for future dungeons so I wanted it to be more modular. I like the idea of using cardfoam for the walls too. Here's what I was thinking:

Attach the floortiles to cardfoam. Use cardfoam for the walls attached to "base" floor tiles also attached to cardfoam (instead of the walls just sitting on top of the floortiles). Here's my dilema. Compare the walls:

Notice how LuckyJoe's walls are sitting on the middle of the 1" floortile and leave a slightly less than 1/2" floortile space? While Shatterdragon's appear to have a 1" floortile clearance on either side of the wall? Did Shatterdragon kitbash the floor tiles to create a space in the middle of the floortiles or was it just because he was using much thinner matboard and it only appears there's a 1" floortile on either side?

Personally, I'll probably go with LuckyJoe's method because I think having that extra 1/2" tile clearance is good when you're using larger "medium" size minitures in tight spaces. But I like the cleaner, more uniform look of Shatterdragon's walls. Any ideas?

As for the masterboard - I was originally going to go with the velcro method but then I saw and the mat appears to be some sort of non-slip surface. I think this would work well too because if the floortiles and walls are all abutting (as opposed to the walls sitting on the floortiles) they'd be less prone to moving about. The non-slip surface would keep them all together like a jigsaw puzzle. However, what is the non-slip surface and where can I get it?

I have a few questions regarding your use of poster tac.
What type of paper/printing have you used with the poster tack? Was it laser printed or inkjet? Do you coat or otherwise protect the surfaces in any way?
I tried a similar approach for securing modular mayhem building flats and the poster tac tore my cardstock bases when I tried to remove it! Any tips you can provide would be appreciated.

Hi, Tima113. First let me say I'm sorry you had trouble with the poster tac. That must have been pretty frustrating. All the work we put into making our builds and then something like that happens. I haven't had that happen to me with the poster tac I use, even after multiple uses. I started using the poster tac after reading how LD2062 was using it, I don't recall him ever reporting that kind of problem either.

For the Chaos in Carpathia build I used 110lb cardstock, printed with an inkjet printer. There was no protective sealant used for that build, though sometimes I do paint on matte decoupage for extra strength, especially on ground tiles. Maybe application of a coat or two of matte decoupage would help.

In order to figure it out I guess it would help to know what you used as far as paper and printing type (inkjet/laser). Lighter weight cardstock might be a factor, and I've heard that laser printing can peel/flake off. Also, not all poster tac is equal. Some of the more expensive brands may have a lot more grab. I use the inexpensive stuff from Walmart, and I think LD2062 said he uses poster tac from dollar stores.

Are you using REMOVABLE Poster Tack? How big a ball of it? I use like jewelry bead size or smaller.


I also use 110 cardstock with an inkjet printer, and my ink isn't even color fast.
I've had rips when I still used rubber cement though.

And I think the Walmart one is the stuff I get the dollar store. (Its made by one of the super glue companies, right Luckyjoe?)

Another thing you could do is use a sheet a glass or plastic on top of the tiles and then use the poster tack on the glass.

Have you looked at the prices in online stores? I buy from a site called 4inkjets.com, you might want to see what their prices are for cartridges or refill kits.
